Aphthous ulcers, more commonly known as canker sores, are a common and painful problem that occurs on oral mucosal tissue such the gums, inner lip, or tongue areas.
Etiology (Causes) of Aphthous Ulcers
Aphthous ulcers commonly affect people of all ages, especially young adults. Various possible causes include genetics, stress, physical or chemical trauma, food sensitivity, tobacco use, nutritional deficiency, weakened immune system, or toothpaste ingredients, to name a few. While the causes of aphthous ulcers may generally be unclear, clinicians are able to differentiate aphthous ulcers from other infections that cause similar lesions (such as oral herpes simplex virus).
Treatments
Because the precise cause of aphthous ulcers is difficult to know, clinicians often prescribe multi-ingredient oral rinses which are custom prepared by a pharmacist. An aphthous ulcer therapy is frequently referred to as “Magic Mouthwash” (MMW). Ingredients are customized and may include an Antibiotic, Anti-inflammatory, Pain reliever, Antifungal, or other agents. The mouth is usually rinsed 2 or more times daily for 7-14 days.
Overcoming “THE” Barrier to Successful Outcomes
In all cases, THE major problem clinicians must overcome is medication adherence to oral mucosal tissue so that therapeutic impact is made, and relief occurs. Maximizing drug contact with ulcerated tissue is a challenge that Health Dimensions is uniquely qualified to resolve.
HDRX specializes in therapies for the mouth and has created an OPTIMIZED MMW formulation with mucoadhesive polymer technology. The therapy requires no refrigeration and can help the clinician target problems differently than standard MMW.
