Pain Management Solutions

The management of consistent, chronic or intense pain is not just a quality of life issue.

Pain management is essential because even when the underlying disease process is stable, uncontrolled pain prevents patients from working productively, enjoying recreation, or taking pleasure in their usual roles in the family and society.

There are a number of studies that suggest that compounded medications are a growing part of pain management.  The pharmacists at Health Dimensions Clinical pharmacy, in conjunction with a prescribing physician will create customized treatment solutions that can provide not only unique pain management options, but in forms and dosages that are not necessarily available through a commercial pharmacy.

With topical medications, the medicine is applied directly to the point of pain, often through a gel, spray or lotion.

Sterile Injectables

Among the varied dosage forms that Health Dimensions Clinical Pharmacy can provide, sterile injectables are among the most common. Steroids are used in epidermal injections among others..

Drugs are not the only sterile injectable that can help deal with pain.  Studies have shown that injecting sterile water can help with pain management during labor.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain may have a myriad of causes and perpetuating factors, and therefore can be much more difficult to manage than acute pain.  The management of chronic pain can require a multidisciplinary approach and customized treatment protocols to meet the specific needs of each patient.

Pain is considered chronic or persistent if it lasts for longer than 3 months despite medication or treatment.  While many people can return to normal life quickly after an injury or operation,  sometimes the pain can carry on for extended periods of time.

Chronic pain can be caused by a variety of afflictions, including diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, or back pain. In dealing with pain management over long periods of time, doctors may seek out innovative treatment solutions with the help of the compounding pharmacists at Health Dimensions.

Sports Medicine

Regular physical activity can lead to aches and pains that come and go.  In sports medicine, the aches and pains can be more intense or even persistent.  The solutions provided by a compounding pharmacist help athletes through a targeted response that is personalized for the individual.

Among the solutions available through Health Dimensions Clinical pharmacy are custom doses, topical pain relievers, and anti-inflammatories, combined sports medicine doses, and compounded antifungal medications.

Addiction

Opioid addiction and abuse is a worldwide problem.  Healthcare providers have been searching for alternatives to opioids in such things as pain management and barring any available alternatives, the search shifts to the safest way to provide certain medications to avoid abuse.

Health Dimensions Clinical Pharmacy works with physicians to find safe and effective alternatives, as well as alternative delivery methods for medications, such as transdermal patches that can decrease the likelihood of misuse.

Palliative Care

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with serious illnesses, such as cancer or heart failure.  Patients in palliative care may receive medical care for their symptoms or palliative care, along with treatment intended to cure their serious illness.

When patients are dealing with long-term illnesses, palliative care is often called for and pain management is an important part of that treatment. Compounded medications can make a difference for those in palliative care, especially if their condition impairs traditional pain delivery methods.
